We were delighted to welcome Jean Roche, Lead Fund Manager at Schroder UK Mid-Cap Fund (SCP:LSE) to the Investor Summit 2026. She was interviewed by Donald Leggatt, Head of IR Media at Investor Summit, who asked about her investment philosophy, and what was surprising about the FTSE 250 Index. Jean told us: “What I'm trying to do is I'm trying to pick the best 50 UK Mid-Caps out of the mid-250 Index, which is the FTSE 250 Excluding Investment Trusts. I want to buy operating companies. And I try and buy the best 50 attractively valued companies that are either unique companies, or they'll be flex. Unique is if they're doing something that's different to every other company. They might be more likely to be acquired, the supply of what they do is less than the demand, so they have pricing power, very important in an inflationary environment. And then we also invest in what's called flex stocks. They can be more cyclical. They might have a strategic crossroads that they're at. They may have a change in management. There may be lots of self-help they can do, or they might be at a cyclical low. We curate 50 of those stocks and put them together in our portfolio.” Subscribe to our Investor Summit channels to see more video and podcast content like this.
